On 16 February 1941, the SS Gairsoppa was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland. It’s resting place on the ocean floor was a mile deeper than the Titanic and, until recently, the wreck and its cargo lay undisturbed. On board were over 700 never-delivered letters. London’s postal museum has now rescued the missives from Davy Jones’ locker and put them on display. The haul includes letters from soldiers to their loved ones, and ordinary people living through WWII.
