Royal London Hospital Museum

Housed in the former crypt of a nineteenth-century church (the building also accommodates the library of the School of Medicine and Dentistry), the museum has sections on the history of the hospital since its foundation in 1740, including former London Hospital nurses Edith Cavell and Eva Luckes, and Joseph Merrick, the 'Elephant Man'. Merrick's remains are too fragile to be exhibited, but a replica skeleton created from digital 3D scans of of his bones is now on display. You can also see a cardboard church he made as a present for the actress Madge Kendall. A showcase devoted to forensic medicine features original material on the Jack the Ripper murders – including a facsimile of the famous 'From Hell' letter – and the London Hospitalsurgeon who helped to investigate them.There is also a permanent exhibition of artefacts and archives relating to the history of healthcare in the East End – on show are instruments, medical and nursing equipment, uniforms, medals, works of art, books and other archive material.
