Time Out says

What is it?

The UK’s first-ever LGBTQ+ museum offers a valuable peek into centuries of queer history. A free-to-enter space on the corner of Granary Square in King’s Cross, it has welcomed over 100,000 visitors since opening in 2022.

Why go?

As one of London’s newest museums, Queer Britain is properly urgent and exciting. Its collection is a riot of voices, objects and images covering over 100 years of queer life in Britain through the lenses of activism, art, culture and social history.

There are some real historical treasures to be found, including a copy of the 1957 Wolfenden Report which proposed the decriminalisation of male homosexuality, artwork by Duncan Grant and a bronze statue of Radclyffe Hall by her lover Lady Una of Troubridge.

Among these, you’ll find plenty of artefacts relating to more contemporary queer icons, from a rainbow cape worn by Olly Alexander during his 2019 Glastonbury set to a letter from Queer Britain’s newest patron, Sir Elton John, to his younger self.

When queer history is so often forgotten or sidelined, it still feels pretty radical to see it take centre stage here.

Don’t miss:

Alongside its ever-evolving permanent collection, the museum now hosts several temporary displays each year. In 2025 this includes temporary exhibits on Bronski Beat and the 20th anniversary of UK Black Pride.

When to visit:

The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, from noon until 6pm. It is usually busiest on weekends.

Ticket info:

Admission to the museum is free, with donations encouraged. Visitors can turn up on the day or book tickets in advance via the museum’s website, and donations can be online or in person using tap-to-donate points around the venue.

Time Out tip:

Be sure to check out the museum’s events programme, which encompasses talks, in-conversation events, walking tours and more.
