This fin-de-siècle period piece was founded by descendants of Captain Cook in two grand Victorian townhouses. The lobby and staircase are hung with old paintings, and the bedrooms all have fantastic 19th-century carved oak beds, sumptuous drapes and shelves of old books.
The suites are spectacular: the Tudor Room has a huge stone-faced fireplace and a minstrels’ gallery, while tragedy queens should plump for the Judy Garland room with her old bed (and replica ruby slippers). Bistrot 190 provides a casually elegant setting for great breakfasts, while the warm, wood-panelled 190 bar is a charming and sophisticated setting for cocktails.
