Anna McCormack, food critic at Time Out Abu Dhabi, on Pearls & Caviar:

Taking inspiration from the UAE's rich pearl-diving history, the Pearls & Caviar restaurant has taken up the black-and-white contrast of its two spherical namesakes, and run with it. Dutch interior-design company Concrete's smooth lines of pearls are reflected in everything from the platinum accented white flatwear gracing the tables, through the strings of gunmetal grey spheres serving as privacy curtains between tables to the black leather covered central pillar around which banquette seating is wrapped.

The dining room is intimate and dark - the caviar in contrast to the pearl of the light, bright and white open-air rooftop bar above - and with dramatic views across a creek to the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, this is without a doubt Abu Dhabi's most stylish dining and drinking destination. Chef Cyril Calmet's fine-dining seafood menu more than lives up to the high standard expected from such an elegant venue and was runner-up in the 'Best Seafood' category at the Time Out Abu Dhabi Food Awards 2012.

New on the scene

The pick of this year’s entries for the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, as selected by Time Out Abu Dhabi:

Brasserie Angelique at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers hotels holds its own amid the opulence and sand dunes of the UAE. Evoking the spirit of a classic Parisian bistro, but with a little added Abu Dhabi sparkle, the monochrome interior is adorned with gold and art deco features. Australian design firm DBI, who were responsible for the design of the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers itself, managed to create a dining space that is elegant while also being relaxed and informal – this is a restaurant in which to have a romantic dinner for two but where a group of old friends can laugh freely as well.

White paintwork and feature mirrors allow the dual-fabric wide, vertical striped banquette seating to stand out, and the marble-topped wrought-iron tables add a touch of classic irreverence which almost feels rebellious when measured against the slick opulence of hotel’s other venues. The menu offers French bistro classics served with five-star flair, such as steak tartar made tableside and side dishes that come close to stealing the show entirely.
