John Adams conducts the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Orchestra in a semi-staged performance of his opera about the American president's journey to meet the Chinese leader MAO tse-tung. Directed by Paul Curran, the cast features soprano Kathleen Kim (Madame Mao), tenor Alan Oke (Chairman Mao), bass-baritone Gerald Finley (Chou En-Lai), baritone Robert Orth (President Nixon), soprano Jessica Rivera (Pat Nixon), bass-baritone James Rutherford (Kissinger), mezzo-sopranos Stephanie Marshall (Secretary), Louise Poole (Secretary) and Susan Platts (Secretary). (Note: at 5.15pm there is a Proms Plus event at the Royal College of Music.)
