Neliswe Xaba/Mamela Nyamza

Two very interesting South African solo artists perform in a double bill. Neliswe Xaba presents 'They Look At Me And That's All They Think', a piece that translates the story of the Venus Hottentot (a South African woman exploited in European freak shows of the nineteenth century) to the image of an African woman's body today. The second piece is Mamela Nyamza's 'Hatched', using tensions between classical ballet and African dance to reveal a woman's evolving sexuality within the conventions of marriage.
