St Petersburg's mighty Mariinsky Ballet celebrates 50 years since it first performed in London. Of course, back then, it was called the Kirov and came from Leningrad, but while the names change, the company's proud tradition and superlative technique stays solidly in place. Tonight's programme is a trio of works by Michel Fokine, choreographer with the legendary Ballets Russes, that ranges from the ethereal 'Chopaniana' to the spiky Stravinsky-scored 'The Firebird', with 'Scheherazade' in the middle. 'The Firebird', incidentally, has probably the best closing scene of any ballet in the rep. Worth waiting for.
