Four clowning comedy shows to see at the 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe

This madass double-act – made up of LAMDA graduates Letty Butler and Lucy Pearman (see what they did with their name, there?) – submerge themselves in this underwater adventure. Part ‘The Little Mermaid’, part ‘The Mighty Boosh’.

Newcomer. Character comedy. Clowning.

Marny Godden’s long been a Fringe favourite as part of oddball sketch troupe The Grandees. But this year she’s going solo with a mix of silly character comedy and absurdist clowning. She’s always been an enchanting performer in The Grandees’s shows, so we can’t wait to see what she comes up with all on her lonesome.

5.20pm, Underbelly Cowgate.

Clowning. Free.

Prop comedy isn’t hip, right? Especially when delivered by a Spandex-clad man with a bowl haircut, yeah? How wrong you are (and what specific questions you ask.) Spencer Jones’s goofball clowning and strange homemade puppets are pure, feel-good silliness.

9pm, Heroes @ The Hive.

Clowning. International.

Trygve Wakenshaw’s 2014 offering, ‘Kraken’, was our favourite show last year. If you missed it, he’s reviving it at the Underbelly. But the clowning sensation from New Zealand also brings a brand-new show, ‘Nautilus’, to this year’s festival. 90 minutes of physical lunacy, he says is his most ambitious show yet.
