We’re sure many Londoners would agree that beer’s pretty great. But the University of Agriculture in Krakow, Poland, is so passionate about the foamy stuff that it has made it part of the curriculum – by launching the world’s first beer PhD. The doctoral studies in malting and brewing, launched a few months ago in collaboration with five other universities across Europe, let hop enthusiasts learn all about the science of beer.

As well as getting hands-on experience in breweries, students will also be exploring the properties of beer in the lab. Course co-ordinator Aleksander Poreda told the Warsaw Post that the students will be engaged in ‘advanced research’ (presumably involving sipping the odd pint) that will ultimately help ‘implement innovative solutions for the brewing industry in Poland and around the world’. Who said university was just an excuse for a giant piss-up, eh?
