If you fancy swapping Sydenham for Sydney, getting to the Outback is now just a hop, skip and a jump away thanks to a new flight that’ll get you from London to Australia in a single 17-hour trip. From today you can buy tickets for the 9,000 mile non-stop journey, which is the first time a regular passenger service has directly linked Europe with Oz. The new flight from Qantas airlines will use Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes to carry 236 passengers at a time between London and Perth, Western Australia.

But the luxury of not having to jump on different planes and carry heavy suitcases between airport lounges comes with a hefty price tag. Economy tickets start at £1,095 return, but there will be deals during which the price is expected to drop to £900. The flights will start running from London on March 25 2018, so even if you have managed to bag a ticket you'll have to wait a while before you start jet-setting down under.

Want to get away? Norwegian Air has launched London-to-Singapore flights for just £179.

Or find a top place to explore the capital at one of London's best hotels.
