Never underestimate audiences' appetite for a bit of slap and tickle. Moviegoers and critics may have been left a little limp by 2015's 'Fifty Shades of Grey', the bloodless big-screen adaptation of EL James's genre-defining bonkbuster. But that hasn't stopped them clicking in droves on the new trailer for upcoming sequel 'Fifty Shades Darker', which launched this week and swiftly broke 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' record as the most viewed trailer ever in a 24-hour period with over 112 million hits. Hey, imagine the damage they could do if they teamed up? Vader already has the outfit. 'Fifty Shades Darth-er', anyone?
The trailer scored a whopping 40 million views in the USA - that'd be about 1 in 8 people, if it wasn't for the fact that some pervs are presumably watching it over and over - but the UK actually did even better per capita, with 18.9 million clicks, or one for every 3.5 people in our nation of supposed prudes. Both 'Fifty Shades' stars are back in the saddle, with Jamie Dornan returning as snooty aristocratic S&M fiend Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as his regular whipping girl Anastasia Steele. But director Sam Taylor-Wood has jumped ship, handing the handcuff keys over to screen veteran James Foley, whose work on the likes of 'Glengarry Glen Ross', 'Twin Peaks', 'House of Cards' and, um, Madonna's 'Papa Don't Preach' video (yep, he's been around for a while) lead us to expect something a little grittier and less surface-shiny this time around.
Find out when 'Fifty Shades Darker' is released on Feb 10 next year. And keep an eye on timeout.com/film for all the latest movie news and reviews.
