Campaigners are holding a ‘Wear What You Want’ beach party at the French Embassy tomorrow from noon to show support for Muslim women in the country.

The protest comes after 15 French towns introduced a ban on the burkini. The policy has been described as racist and sexist policing of women’s bodies. It’s resulted in one woman getting fined €11 for wearing a headscarf and leggings on the beach in Cannes. In Nice, pictures showed French police forcing a woman to remove her clothing.

The protest organisers write on the Facebook page: ‘Come along to the French Embassy and wear what you want - BURKINIS, BIKINIS, ANYTHING GOES. Bring beach gear: beach umbrellas, towels, bat and ball, boules….’

They say the event will be a space for self-identifying women only but says that others can show support on Twitter with beach selfies and the hashtag #wherewhatyouwant. MADE NGO, a community of young Muslims in the UK, will be in attendance explaining why we must stand against the ban.

Find out more on Facebook and there’s another protest planned for Friday as well.
