Calling all architects of London! How often does a chance come up to design one of London's most important museums? Er, pretty much never – until now. The Museum of London is re-locating to a new home in West Smithfield and it's launching a competition to find an architect who knows their stuff to design the new museum. The new 25,000 square-metre site includes the currently empty Smithfield general market and fish market, the red house, iron mountain and the engine house, which all sit at the Farringdon Road end of West Smithfield.
The competition is being funded by the Mayor of London, and will be split into two stages. After the initial launch in February, a shortlist will be announced in spring, and the winner will be revealed this summer. Once they've settled on an architect, the plan is to get the new museum up and running by 2021. Sketching pencils at the ready, folks.
