Most Londoners have strong opinions about the best places to hang out in the city. Some people might love the villagey vibe of Stoke Newington, others could be all about the rooftops of Peckham, or maybe the bars of Bermondsey do it for you... Now, for the first time ever, Time Out has tried to come up with a definitive guide to the best places to hang out.

Revealed today, our ‘Places To Be 2017’ list has been calculated using data from our City Index – where Londoners rated neighbourhoods for eating, drinking, things to do and happiness – as well as our editors’ expert knowledge about hot new openings. It’s also had input from Postcode Champions, Londoners who love their neighbourhoods (you can become one here).

At number one this year? Hackney Central. The east London area came top in our City Index and was rated highly by our editors. It’s no surprise: Lady Gaga made a surprise appearance at Moth Club in September, there have been queues around the block for the vegan ‘fried chicken’ at Temple of Hackney and Palm Vaults is probably the most Instagrammed place in London right now.

It was followed by Dalston (named best for hedonism in our City Index) and Bethnal Green (named best for drinking). While east London dominated the top spots, interestingly Shoreditch didn’t make the list.
