Put your money away! Here are the week’s best free events
Yayoi Kusama
So big it’s across two sites – Victoria Miro galleries on Wharf Road in Old Street and on St George Street in Mayfair – this brilliant show is chock-a-block with the endlessly fascinating Japanese artist’s preoccupations: pattern, repetition, ‘infinity rooms’ and her now-iconic, humongous distended pumpkins. A selfie in the mirrored room is almost unavoidable. Victoria Miro. Angel. Until Jul 30.
River Island x YMC
London-based brand You Must Create is twenty this year and to celebrate it’s teamed up with River Island on an ace collab that launches this week with a partay. Hosted by menswear collective Individualism, there’ll be cocktails, an illustrator and DJs. River Island, 213 Oxford St. Oxford Circus. Thu Jun 9. 6pm-9pm.
Brixton Windmill Open Days
Before it was home to the best jerk chicken in the country and the very worst estate agents, Brixton had a working windmill. Now open for monthly tours, so pitch up for a mini one or book ahead to check out the upper floors, too. Brixton Windmill. Brixton. Sat Jun 11 and Sun Jun 12.
Smartphone Photography Masterclass
Learn to take such good pics that there’s no need for ‘Amaro’. Foto Ruta will have you snapping like a pro after this two-hour class around King’s Cross. Glass of wine included, booking essential. St Pancras Renaissance. King's Cross. Tue Jun 7, 6pm.
Christie's Lates
Poke around after dark at one of the UK’s busiest auction houses. There’ll be an exhibition with works by Frank Auerbach, David Bomberg and Marc Chagall, a talk from poster expert Paul Rennie and a special ‘antiques challenge’. Christie's South Kensington. South Kensington. Tue Jun 7.
Trooping the Colour
Her Maj turned 90 this year and to celebrate her loyal troops will be out in force. Sort of Crufts for the army, this spectacle sees operational service personnel from the Household Division strutting their stuff on Horse Guards Parade. Horse Guards Parade. Charing Cross. Sat Jun 11, 10am.
