We like to think we’re the city that pioneers all the hot new nightlife trends but this time NYC has pipped us to the post – or rather, the deck. Brooklynites have been whiling away their nights playing shuffleboard since they got their first dedicated club, the Royal Palms, back in 2014. Now the retro sport is finally coming over here as the London Shuffle Club prepares to pop up in Shoreditch on October 12 for three months. For the uninitiated, imagine a mash-up of bowling and curling, as played by pensioners on cruiseships.
But banish all thoughts of shuffling geriatrics: as you’d expect, the game is getting the full hipster makeover, complete with tropical vibes, neon lights, music, craft beer, cocktails, Americana food and a vintage motorbike and sidecar (serving prosecco, of course). Plus there'll also be a table shuffleboard (which is another London first). Best of all, no real training is required, and you can do it with a drink in hand. Forget Rio, this is the kind of sporting activity we can really get on board with.
