Canary Wharf is upping its ice skating game this year by building an 8km grid of LED lights into the ice, which can be programmed to create moving patterns and designs. The twinkling LED lights also interact with music and feature a crazy 16 million different colours, (although there must be some kind of wizardry involved to stop the ice from melting with all that extra heat).

Once you've worked up an appetite, head to the on-site bar where they'll have seasonal snacks and delicious winter warmers including mulled wine and cider, as well as cocktails, wines and craft beers. The ice rink is open seven days a week and if you don't fancy sliding around the ice for an hour, there's a heated platform where you can watch the action. And with that many people in skates trying to take selfies, there's bound to be some bumps and falls.

LuminoCity at Ice Rink Canary Wharf is open Nov 4–Feb 25.
