Sun, sea and seriously good food – the Italians have it all. But now London’s getting a taste of the Mediterranean thanks to the arrival of a new Italian market, Mercato Metropolitano. It’s setting up shop in an old paper factory in Elephant & Castle, where they’ll have a bakery, pasta maker, fishmonger, butcher, coffee roaster, cheesemonger, and the ‘best pizza maker in Naples’, apparently.
If that’s not enough to satisfy your appetite, there’s also a huge supermarket selling produce from southern Italy and an outdoor street food area (because this is London, after all). It officially launches in September, but parts of the market are already open and events are planned throughout the month including performances this week by the 300-strong Some Voices choir, who’ll be covering everything from Blur to Beyoncé. From next month, there will also be an urban garden, cinema, barber shop, boxing gym and even a pop-up hotel, so they’ve pretty much thought of everything. Now all we need is for them to bring over some of that baking Mediterranean sun.
