Deptford residents may have already stumbled across Buster Mantis, the new Jamaican-inspired bar, café and creative space that opened on New Year's Eve. It's run by a local Jamaican family, who have gone for a more minimal vibe than your average Jamaican bar: 'We’re not really going for the whole ‘island paradise’ look, to be honest', says founder Gordon McGowan. 'My hometown Mandeville is nowhere near the beach, and it rains a lot. We’d like to think that our food just speaks loudly enough for itself.'

The menu covers everything from the classic jerk staples to more exotic seasonal dishes. Drinks-wise, there's a carefully thought-out selection of beers, wine, cocktails and 'dangerously strong' house rum punch. The first arch will be where the food and boozing happens, while the second will be used for art exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, pop-ups and projects by creative locals.
