Best known for his role in TV’s ‘Silicon Valley’, Pakistani-American actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani has now co-written and stars in ‘The Big Sick’, a tender, personal and very funny five-star comedy movie which was a big hit at January’s Sundance Film Festival in the US.
On the evening of Wednesday July 5, Time Out will give a small group of Londoners the chance to see ‘The Big Sick’ two weeks before its general release at a special event hosted by Nanjiani himself.
‘The Big Sick’ tells how the early days of Nanjiani’s real-life relationship with his now-wife Emily (played by Zoe Kazan in the film, while Nanjiani plays himself) were affected by her sudden mysterious illness and his conflicted relationship with his parents and background. It’s a brilliantly honest and affecting film: entertaining and truthful.
Starting at 6.15pm at the West End’s exclusive Ham Yard Hotel, the evening will begin with a drinks reception. Then at 7pm, Nanjiani will himself give an extended introduction to the film which is bound to reflect why he is a star of the US stand-up scene (so expect jokes). After the film, Nanjiani will be back on stage for a Q&A about the film when he will explain how ‘The Big Sick’ sticks closely to his own life and to his marriage to the film’s co-writer, Emily V Gordon.
This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of America’s rising stars about how he turned his own life into one of the year’s most celebrated movies.
