Jess Angell has been Instagraming our beloved tube network for the best part of five years. An architectural fanatic, her photography is all about symmetry, curves, tunnels, empty spaces and lines. The Londoner describes her alter ego, 'Miss Underground,' as a 'girl who just loves the look, feel and history of the London Underground'. Here are her five favourite photos of the tube.
Clapham South Deep Level Shelter
'There is something very beautiful about these deep underground spaces. They should be preserved and kept safe for generations to come.'
Superhuman
'Last year I was very happy to finally meet an Instagram hero of mine! Simone was a gentleman and is a complete legend. We had a great time down shooting in the Underground. I hope he comes back to London soon!'
Light Exit
'The Underground is over 140 years old and changes daily with stations being upgraded and new lines being worked on all the time. We sometimes don't appreciate the hard work that the staff do to keep our transport system moving and safe. The tube is the heart of our city, it gets people to work, tourists to the sites and keeps people moving in their daily lives. I love to just stop and look at how beautiful the spaces we rush through every day can be. I think the newest upgrade at Tottenham Court Road is very impressive and clean.'
A New Adventure
'As you've all probably guessed, I love capturing the spaces on the London Underground. I find new details and lines every time I travel on the tube. I don't wait too long to take my images, usually only around five minutes. If it takes longer I walk away and plan to come back another day to capture it. Charing Cross station is a favourite of mine. The blue details and lines always make me smile.'
Space Ship or Praying Mantis?
'I have always loved the handrails at Hyde Park Station. They make the escalators come alive with all their alien-ness!'
