Sound the fashion klaxon. London’s absurdly talented menswear designer Grace Wales Bonner has only gone and made a film with artist Harley Weir, and it’s being screened tomorrow at the Institute of Contemporary Art.
Since her striking Ebonics AW15 collection Wales Bonner has been changing the menswear landscape at the same time as deftly destroying decades of stereotypes of black masculinity with swathes of velvet, embellished collars and a beautiful, delicate cast of models. This latest project, Practice, released in advance of her much-anticipated show at LFWM, looks set to do more of the same. Set in South Africa – with scenes across Johannesburg and Cape Town – it sees Leroy Mokgatle, a 17-year-old ballet dancer from Pretoria dancing in and out of fantasy and reality, set to the beautiful sounds of Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange).
Before too long Wales Bonner will be a household name, so head down to the ICA and see the work of a true great Briton up close while you still can.
Fri Jun 2, 8pm. ICA Cinema. Book tickets here.
