Summer has finally arrived – and we’ve got some pretty cool news for you. There’s an ice cream fest coming to town. And not just any ice cream fest. A GELATO fest (gelato is a high-milk, lower-fat version of ice cream, supposedly invented in 1559 by some guy called Bernardo Buontalenti. But you knew that, didn’t you?).
From Friday June 16 to Sunday June 18, The Gelato Festival will park up at Old Spitalfields Market, fresh from touring Italy (and before it zips off to Poland and Germany). It’s actually a competition format: each ‘stage’ (London being one) sees a host of gelato makers ply their wares to a milk-hungry public, who’ll then vote for their fave. In September, the two most popular flavours from each city will face-off in Florence, to be crowned the European Gelato Champion. It is, the organisers state, ‘Eurovision, for the tastebuds’. If that doesn’t get you giddy with excitement, we don’t know what will.
Entry is free, but you’ll need to buy a wristband to taste the 16 gelato varieties on offer (and to vote for your favourite). There’ll also be gelato-related activities and historical expos for the dessert-obsessed.
The Gelato Festival takes place Fri Jun 16 – Sun Jun 18 at Old Spitalfields Market. Tickets are available from the festival’s website.
