Hungry but strapped for cash? We've got you covered with our cheap eats of the week.

Pizza. Again?

Don't assume this is just any old pizza. Bruno DiFabio, the proprietor, is a New Yorker. And he's bringing NY-style pie to London.

And that style would be...

The defining feature is the dough, which is thicker than most London pies. Not as a thick as Chicago deep-pan, but you get a hefty mouthful of crust.

Any other tastes of NY?

The NY philosophy of toppings holds that More Is Good and Much More Is Much Better. This sometimes yields slices with more calories than the entire contents of Elvis's fridge. But here the lavish toppings taste great. Try Popeye, Fabio, and Brooklyn Point. Best of all was a margherita.

Will the pies hit my eyes with big prices?

They're biggish, but so are the pies: 16 inches and 20 inches, and a 16-inch is plenty for three. And with prices starting from £20 (from £3.75 for a slice) you're not spending a fortune. There are also daily specials of note, including notably over-sized calzone. Okay. Eat there or take away? Eat there and you get free refills on sodas from a machine. The tables at the back are the place to sit. Service is very friendly.

And will Mr DiFabio be there?

We can't guarantee it, but he was last time we went. If you see him, tell him 'Yo! Bruno!' from me.

The bottom line: New York-style pizza crosses the Pond to Soho.

Meal for two with drinks and service: around £25.

NY Fold is at 103 Charing Cross Rd, WC2H 0DT.
