We were totally spellbound by Todd Haynes’s gorgeous new film ‘Carol’. You’d need to have a heart made of stone not to swoon as Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara’s eyes meet across a Manhattan department store counter. As a director, gay stories have often been central to what Todd does. But what are his favourite gay-themed movies?

We asked Todd and more than 25 cultural pioneers – from cult director John Waters to super-producer Christine Vachon – to share with us their ten best LGBT movies. We did some very complicated sums and ta-da, came up with a list of 50 unmissable films.

Here’s Todd’s top 10 LGBT films

In alphabetical order:

Brokeback Mountain

Fireworks

Fox And His Friends

Happy Together

Les amitiés particulières

Madchen In Uniform

Midnight Cowboy

My Own Private Idaho

Strangers On A Train

Un Chant d'Amour
