The most you’ll usually get from a cup of joe is a hefty caffeine hit and an even heftier dent in your bank account. But this week, buying a coffee could be a much more rewarding (and cheaper) experience if you pop into the Café from Crisis near Spitalfields. Until Sunday, 12 of London’s top independent roasters are taking turns to fire up the espresso machines at the Commercial Street café and serving a hot beverage of choice for only £1. That’s right, you can get a fancy Allpress, Caravan, Nude, Square Mile, Climpson or Workshop flat white for a quid. This might seem counter-intuitive (surely a pricier cuppa would be more charitable?) but all proceeds will be donated, and the whole point is to bring people in and spread awareness of the amazing work with the homeless that Crisis does. Now that’s a feel-good pick-me-up.

Café from Crisis, 64 Commercial St,  E1 6LT.
