Bussey building has been saved but another Peckham venue is under threat

In last week's magazine we reported that the future of Peckham's beloved Bussey Building was still under threat - which it very much was when we went to print. Later that day, however, news broke that the developers who purchased the neighbouring building had withdrawn their proposals to convert it into flats - meaning the Bussey was safe and our report slightly, er, untimely. Above all else, we're just happy that one of our favourite venues is secure. A victory for Peckham, it seemed. But in painfully bizarre timing, it also transpired last week that 300 metres down the road another great Peckham venue, Canavan's, might now be in danger. Proposals for flats and a restaurant next door to the club would leave it open to countless noise complaints, claims Canavan's owner, who has set up a Change.org petition to gather support. The developers say that both the club and new scheme can get along swimmingly. But they would, wouldn't they? It's still early days yet, so let's hope this isn't Bussey 2.0.

In other news, Notting Hill Carnival might be ticketed in future.
