An exercise class where gym-goers bed down for a nap is coming to London

Does the thought of doing exercise just make you want to curl up and take a nap? Well, you’re in luck if you’d rather snooze than get sweaty because a new workout has been created just for you.

Yep, ‘Napercise’ – a ‘fitness class’ at David Lloyd Clubs where you are told by an instructor to take a 45-minute sleep – is officially a thing. If you live in Sidcup, lucky you because that’s where they’ll be trialling the new ‘40 wink workout’. During the class, an instructor will get you to swap dumbbells for duvets as you settle down for a kip to an soundtrack of atmospheric music. The temperature will even be lowered to a level that promotes calorie-burning while you sleep. Cool.

David Lloyd’s reasoning for creating the snooze session is that a ‘tiredness epidemic’ is, apparently, sweeping the UK. According to its research, 86 percent of parents suffer from fatigue and 26 percent regularly get less than five hours' sleep a night. The Napercise classes have been inspired by academic studies suggesting bedding down during the day can help tackle tiredness by boosting alertness, alleviating feelings of anxiety or stress and improving your mood. If you can’t make the class, have a workout’ at home – by which we mean have a good long afternoon nap.

The Napercise trial will take place on Saturday April 29 and Sunday April 30 at David Lloyd Sidcup. You can sign up to join for free – if you think it’s worth getting out of bed for.
