Simple but effective, this large, dark and sometimes lively bar on a quiet Marylebone street provides quality sustenance to diner and drinker alike.
The Temperance’s lunchtime menu, which changes daily, moves beyond gastropub clichés to take in the likes of black-eyed pea, chickpea and aubergine stew; after 5pm, it’s Brit-style tapas along the lines of mini chipolatas and whitebait with tartare sauce, as well as an appetising cheeseboard.
Beer drinkers will find San Miguel, Sharp’s Doom Bar, Ringwood and Beck’s Vier on the bar, plus bottles of Moretti and Corona behind it, while some 15 wines come by the glass. There’s also a dining room upstairs, and pavement seating for smokers.
