The Spaniards Inn has been described as ‘London’s most haunted pub’ – but then so have a lot of boozers in the capital. Few, though, are haunted by celebrity ghosts. This Hampstead Heath gaff is reportedly frequented by the spirit of dastardly highwayman Dick Turpin, who’d habitually hide out here. Now you can do the same, as its snug atmosphere – courtesy of dark panels and low beams that stretch through the bar and restaurant rooms – seems unchanged since the pub opened in 1585. Craft beers are on regular rotation, the friendly staff are well-versed in the fine art of cocktail-making and the menu of slightly poshed-up pub classics should keep everyone happy. The large beer garden backs right onto the Heath, just in case – like ol’ Dick himself – you need to make a quick getaway.
Pet your pooch
Dogs are welcome both inside and out, and staff are always happy to provide a fresh bowl of water for your four-legged friend. So, if you’re after a dog-friendly restaurant, you’re barking up the right tree.
Find a cosy corner
The Spaniards has both literary flair – former regulars include John Keats and Charles Dickens – and cosy corners aplenty. It’s the perfect pub, then, for nestling down with a good book (or, preferably, Time Out).
