Soma has expanded from its Soho base, opening an outpost in Canary Wharf. Tucked under a DLR line, the concrete exterior and lowkey signage give the space a bunker-like quality, a quiet retreat in an area better known for skyscrapers and wannabe Gordon Gekkos. The menu is similarly minimalist, with cocktails named for their ingredients. This is more convincing in some drinks than others: the Raisin (made with butter raisin Hapusa gin, amontillado, jasmine and Champagne) maintains the dryness of Champagne while also bringing in an undeniably raisin-y sweetness, but the Carrot (a martini made with vodka, charred carrot, dill and caraway vermouth), is a herby, earthy take on the classic drink rather than obviously carrot-y.

The Pomegranate, made with Haku vodka, chai, pomegranate and topped with coconut rice foam is tasty and well-balanced, and I say that as someone who is usually foamphobic.
Time Out tip
The bar snacks are good, but they are just that – snacks. If you’re hungry, grab a bite before you arrive.
