Well, actually no. McGettigan’s may be the latest in a global chain of modern Irish pub-bars, but – at last – the loop has been broken and the anachronistic vibe of its previous occupants has been ditched. Of course, it’s still got that unique layout about it – a warren of rooms over four levels that lead you up, down and full circle around the premises – but the ‘spit and sawdust’ feeling has been banished.
In its place, a youthful atmosphere pervades the well-decorated, dimly-lit environment, with comfortable seating and hard-working staff, and where live music wins over muted sport on TV. Beer selection is basic and wine, should that be your preference, is bloody awful but, in an area where there are too many bars for the number of drinkers, the sum of all these parts is a clear winner.
