Time Out says

Please note, The Castle is now closed. Time Out Editors.

This black-fronted, pie-slice of a pub is an unlikely place to find such a range of sought-after, high-quality ales. In truth, it’s not a very sympathetic environment: the room is a little characterless and the music is usually too loud.

But the staff do their best and the drinks are decent: you can expect an array of unusual ales, which seem to rotate on a barrel-by-barrel basis. Large taps advertising Peroni and Erdinger Weissbier add variety for drinkers, as do bottled Corona, Beck’s and Budweiser, alongside around a dozen wines of each colour.

The food here is another important feature: doorstep sandwiches stuffed with roast pork; bangers and mash; and burgers. A big fan by the bar counter gives relief in summer; fat candles in glasses provide atmosphere in winter.
