Step into Ruislip's woodlands and you're transported to ancient times. This nature reserve is alive with hornbeam coppices and oaks, remnants of the vast deciduous forests that once surrounded London. Their history survives in names such as Mad Bess Wood, named after a fearsome eighteenth-century gamekeeper's wife who stalked its paths looking for poachers.
