End House is a striking, contemporary design in a fairly typical London street of mixed, mostly Victorian houses. Architects Edgley Design have made clever use of the small, end-of-terrace site by defining one elevation of the house with a solid wall, with minimal penetrations, that defends the house from the noise of the street. The wall is echoed by another, parallel wall enclosing the site and maintaining privacy to the adjoining house. Between these two walls, an infill of timber and glass forms an entrance to the front and frames two large ground floor windows to the rear, focusing views out to the two garden spaces beyond. The house is constructed with a timber frame, warmcell insulation and panel vent sheathing to create a breathing, eco-construction with very high levels of insulation. As part of Open House London 2011, End House is open on a first-come, first-served basis on September 17 9am-2.30pm, last entry 2.15pm.
