Founded in 1701 by Sephardic Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, the superbly preserved Bevis Marks Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Britain, with a fine collection of Cromwellian and Queen Anne furniture. Services are still held in Portuguese as well as Hebrew. Bevis Marks Synagogue takes part in the annual Open House London event, which takes place in September.
