Between 1958 and 1960, the American artist Robert Rauschenberg chose to test his use of abstraction by focusing his attention on just one subject matter: Dante Alighieri's Inferno. During this period he developed his solvent transfer technique, allowing him to imbue his work with figurative and autobiographical elements.
