They may seem more synonymous with hotter places like Tenerife and Crete, but back in the 1990s Greater London and its surrounds were packed full of water parks including Floridian-style sky-high slides in Chingford and Dartford. ‘Pipe Dreams’ is a nostalgic love letter to these watery community spaces, many of which now no longer exsist. Created by artist Madeleine Famurewa and author, broadcaster and freelance journalist Jimi Famurewa, the exhibition is a mixture of soundscapes, large-scale drawings and installation, evoking these leisure pools in the South East and exploring what they meant to the people who visited.
Alongside the exhibition, look out for a community-minded program of events, including family workshops and talks on the benefits of swimming. A separate evening event, ‘Open Water’, will feature a panel discussion about the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in swimming culture.
