The gimmel ring was around in Medieval and early modern England and used as a wedding band. It was special because it was made of two interlocking rings - one of which was worn by the groom and one by the bride before their wedding day. When they tied the knot, the two bands would be combined into one ring for the woman to keep. Artist Miriam Austin uses this historic item of jewellery as the starting point for her latest multidisciplinary artworks delving into the complex terrain of myth, ritual and colonialism.
