Someone was clearly hoping that this Californian artist’s nine sculptural paintings here could fill this gallery’s fairly daunting space, but they were wrong. These are cool pieces: nine identically sized upended boxes, smeared in pink or yellow paint, with long bronze poles sticking out of them like fancy art snorkels. The tubes act as noses for the scrawled faces on each work. They look like rough tribal masks that have been doodled on with loads of bright paint. Part-ethnographic artefact, part-pop art, part-classic modern sculpture. They are a bit ugly, but there’s a lot to like; they just get a bit lost in the space.
