Jasper Johns: Regrets

The chance discovery of a photo showing Lucian Freud in Francis Bacon’s studio inspired this recent work by the 83-year old American artist. Known for his iconic Flag and target paintings from the late 1950s, Johns turns his attention to reproducing the source material for one of Francis Bacon’s paintings. The series replicates not only the image of Freud perched on a bedstead but also the tears and distressed quality of the original photograph.
