The work of this famous 19th century German photographer, were no doubt part responsible for turning the excavated Roman city of Pompeii into a tourist destination. Having moved his studio from Switzerland to Naples, Sommer established a burgeoning career producing small scale prints, stereo views and cartes de visite, yet these large format prints have rarely been seen as they’ve been kept in storage for over a century.
