The British artist presents his muted, minimal paintings in which the serious and the absurd coexist. Hemsworth’s large-scale canvases painted in flat colours are often populated with cartoon-like characters or outlined forms. For his first show at Matt’s Gallery in 30 years, the influential painter and teacher, who until 2011 was Professor of Fine Art and Director of the MFA Fine Art Programme at Goldsmiths showcases recent work in which the pictorial and ideological are opposed.
