Dutch-born Lawrence Alma-Tadema has long been out of fashion. But his scenes of domestic life in the ancient world – chess-playing Egyptians; spa-bathing Romans – have had a far-reaching influence, even the sword-and-sandals epics of Hollywood. This exhibition will take a fresh look at the nineteenth-century painter.
