The company was founded on 13th November 1965, and its history is closely intertwined with that of director Carlos Avillez. Its repertoire includes works by authors such as Bernard-Marie Koltès, Federico García Lorca, Racine, Schiller, Yukio Mishima, Witold Gombrowicz, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, Lope de Vega, Bertolt Brecht, Molière, Aristophanes, William Shakespeare, Georg Büchner, Henrik Ibsen, António José da Silva, Gil Vicente, Miguel Torga, Miguel Rovisco, Bernardo Santareno, Almeida Garrett, Luís de Camões, Alice Vieira, and Mário Cláudio.
