Far from its golden age, when it was regularly featured in the press (several yellowed cut-up newspaper articles are there to show it), O Caldo Verde is a place where traditional cuisine continues to be as it should: honest. Usually full at lunch, with smaller crowds for dinner, it remains faithful to the recipes that made its name: stuffed squid, monkfish fillets and several cod dishes, including Brás and Lagareiro-style. It also has good steaks and homemade chips.
Time Out tips:
– During the Popular Saints Festivals season, a grill is installed outdoors where sardines are cooked.
– Old-fashioned “baba de camelo” toffee mousse? They have it.
– If you want to try their specialities, call in advance to make a reservation.
