Fado Museum

Permanent displays at this city museum tell the history of this ever-popular musical form; you can book a guided visit that includes a live fado performance. On summer weekends there are also excellent free fado tours of Alfama during which local singers perform - check the website for details. There is a museum café, and the attached restaurant, Travessa do Fado (91 026 3613, open 7pm-2am) serves up delicious snacks and has a good selection of wines. Fado singers often perform here too.
