Hidden in a narrow Chiado street, it is located smack in the middle of Lisbon's nightlife and the historic centre. It is but a very short (downwards) walk to TimeOut Mercado da Ribeira, where you can find the city's top chefs' restaurants. It is thus a great starting point for discovering Lisbon without making detailed plans, even if your family came along. Travelling with your brood can get stressful, with all the extra luggage, and then kids get tired of walking, and they're missing their sleep, and now they're bored, and what was supposed to be such a fun trip goes bad.
But that was before Martinhal. With Martinhal, the adults can go out, have fun and enjoy Lisbon in peace while the kids are left in charge of the hotel staff. Martinhal is judiciously divided between grown-up and kid areas. On one side is the modern, functional and cool hotel with a clean décor and vibrantly designed furniture, with 37 studios and suites offering generous rooms and kitchens. Everything you need to feel at home is available, including good wi-fi.
On the other side you will find a superb playground for children: a Kids Club with art, games and workshops for all ages; a Playstation; a nursery for toddlers older than six months old; and the cherry on top of the cake, the Pyjama Club, which puts kids to bed if their parents feel like misbehaving. The building is over a century old and thus doesn't allow for great amenities; the M Bar Family Café doubles up as breakfast room and cafeteria, serving light lunches and dinners. If you're looking for a more traditional dining experience, ask at the front desk for Bairro Alto's most genuine dining spots, or humour your kids and go down to the Mercado da Ribeira for a hamburger at Honorato's.
