Like a Gaulish village, the Colares region resisted the attacks of phylloxera, an invading plague that wrecked European vineyards in the 19th century. Deep roots - up to 8 metres long - saved these vineyards, whose particular terroir (sandy, swept by a salty wind, dampened by fog) determines the taste of its wine. Colares wines employ homegrown grape varieties Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares, among other Lisbon region traditional varieties. You can discover the Almoçageme estate every Wednesday on an open day with wine tastings at 11am or 3pm. These are also held on the first Saturday of each month.
